No. There is no supported method of getting HD programming from a standard
HD cable box. You would need to purchase a new Digital Cable Ready certified
PC with one or more Digital Cable Tuners.

Your TV card's digital tuner can receive OTA HD digital broadcasts from
local broadcasters or it can receive unencrypted clear QAM HD channels with
a direct cable connection from your cable provider. The analog tuner part of
the card can not receive any HD resolution programming.

Yes, you will need a digital cable box from the company, but it will only
allow you to view and record standard definition channels. In order to view
and record HD programming from you cable provider you will need a Digital
Cable Ready certified PC and one or more Digital Cable tuners with Cable
Cards.

To actually view HD via cable, you need to purchase a new PC from Sony, Dell
or one of the other vendors that sell Digital Cable Ready PC's, and one or
more Digital Cable Tuners. The tuners cannot be purchased by themselves,
they won't work with out a Digital Cable Ready PC. And you'll need to get
the same number of CableCards from your cable company.

I purchased an ATI Tuner from Sony and it is connected to my home built PC.
Vista Media Center recognizes it, I am receiving standard channels fine. I
am using Vista Media Center to control and play Blu-ray and HD movies. The
PC is tied into my entire media center, which inludes a Denon networkable A/V
Receiver and Comcast Digital Cable.

The Comcast Technician is due here in a few days to install a cable card in
the ATI box. However, I am now surprisd to learn about a
disabled(?)/lobotomized part of Vista Media Center??

I am trying to Activate Digital Cable. I receive a message that says "Your
computer is not digital cable ready. You will not be able to set it up for
use with a CableCARD."

Yet, everything about my PC is digital cable ready. What gives? It sounds
like there is collusion to force the public to purchase pc's only from
certain manufacturers. If this is the case, I will certain complain to my
legislators. I'm a law abiding citizen and there isn't any reason I
shouldn't be able to activate this pc.

What do I need to do to get my PC activated for digital cable?

No, I built the unit and had previously used the ATI tuner.

I have had a PC for media purposes for years, and I regularly update it. I
recently upgraded it significantly (cost $3K) and did a clean install of
Vista Ultimate, only to find that at the request of a 3rd party Microsoft has
crippled my copy of Vista, apparently in order to force me off my long-term
PC and onto a PC made by a chosen/blessed manufacturer.

The only reason for that note on the ad (in hindsite) is those are the units
where Sony doesn't cripple Vista.

This situation is very akin to the situation where Verizon was claiming to
sell phones with Bluetooth, but was crippling the Bluetooth.

I can't think of a prior situation where Microsoft purposefully allowed a
third party to determine that my copy of Windows should be crippled. Why
would I expect that they had started selling the software that way?

It was not a request from a 3rd party, it was a demand by CableLabs that the
Digital Cable Tuners only work with a Digital Cable Ready certified PC. And
even those have to be certified by CableLabs. Microsoft and ATI didn't have
any choice in the matter. If they wanted a CableCard capable tuner for the
PC, then they had to follow CableLabs demands.
