Discussion:
CableCard Madness Restricted Content - set by the broadcaster
(too old to reply)

A week ago I upgraded my 7600gs to an 8500gt video card to improve HD
playback performance on my Cablecard media center. All has behaved
flawlessly for 1 week. Today after a reboot at 7:00pm I am getting a
Restricted Content - Restrictions set by the broadcaster or originator of the
content prohibit playback of the program on this computer message on every
channel of live TV.

The system was working flawlessly at 6:00pm.
HDDVDs play fine.
Previously recorded HD content plays fine.
I just can no longer watch any live TV or new recordings

I have tried with no success the following
1. System restore to yesterday and 5 days ago.
2. Reinstalling Video Drivers Nvidia 163.75 WHQL
3. Re-activating digital cable
My original key now fails. (and yes I got the Digital
Cable COA not the Vista one)

Any ideas?
Thanks
Eric

Because of the passive cooling system in the box, replacing the video
card with the old one is a 2+ hour operation, and the behavior (stuttering
and artifacts due to poor support from the nVidia Vista Driver) of the old
card was not acceptable.

If you think it has a chance I will give it a shot but then when I reupgrade
I assume I will be back to square one.

As I am travelling for the next few days I will not be able to try this
until Saturday. When I do I wil report back.

Since the video card has worked for a week and HDCP content still plays back
doesnt the problem have to lie in software somewhere?

It feels like a deactivation, I had to go thru this once with a BIOS
upgrade3 months ago. And if I look in event center I do see the " Hardware
has Changed" message.

Thanks (and I ll respond again by Saturday)

OK, agreed that it is a "hardware has changed" issue. How did you
get reactivated the last time?

This issue seems VERY similar to my posting from 11/15/2007 in this same
forum entitled "Restricted Content" on EVERY channel w/CableCard ... I think
my issues stem from de-activation as well and am anxiously awaiting to hear
how Eric managed to re-activate using his Digital Cable COA in the first
place...I'm hoping it fixes my issue too. Please...spare no details :)

Mine never did work...BUT, I didn't try getting my Digital Cable stuff going
for 2 months after I got the computer...and in the meantime, I updated
drivers for video card and sound card...the symptoms that Eric describes are

The video card that ships with my system has outputs for S-Video, DVI and VGA.

I have tried all three individually after clean reboots and it makes no

When my activation was canceled last time it was the Vista activation. I
have checked and my vista activation is still fine. When my vista
activation was cancelled due to the BIOS change I called the number and got a
code and everything was fine again. With the Digital Cable thing when I
punch in my key and it gets rejected, there is nothing to do but try again.

That being said, I do not get any message like "Digital Cable needs to be
Activated" which is what I would expect. I just retried the key because I
knew of no other reason why Live Content would not play while recorded
content still does.

FYI I have found this to be a good document for most issues
http://utahtechinfo.com/video/cablecard/CableCARD_DCT_TROUBLESHOOTING_GUIDE.pdf Unfortunately they have no advice for this issue

Is there anyone to content to ensure my key is still valid?

Thanks Again
Eric

Mine never did work...BUT, I didn't try getting my Digital Cable stuff going
for 2 months after I got the computer...and in the meantime, I updated
drivers for video card and sound card...the symptoms that Eric describes are
the exact same symptoms I've had all along though.

OK, agreed that it is a "hardware has changed" issue. How did you
get reactivated the last time?

Thanks (and I ll respond again by Saturday)

what happens if you put the OLD video card back in?

Any ideas?
Thanks
Eric

To activate digital cable after I first got the message I tried two things
First, Under TV setup I clicked on the Activate Digital Cable and
entered my key.
This After punching it in I got a "Invald key" message with do
you want to try again Y/N. I tried this three times hoping I would get a
help number like with regular activation.

Second, I Ran the TV setup (I did not uninstall the tuner and run it
without any tuners) selected USA/digital cable and when I was prompted for
the key I got the same result as first time.

My tuners are USB external and are trivial to remove. But would it even let
me run TV setup with NO tuners as I do not have an analog tuner and I expect
it would tell me so? I can try this as well on Saturday.

Thanks again

Today I tried.
1. Removing tuner, and running in analog then
attempting to reactivate the digital cable with the digital tuner
Result: When Reactivating I get a "Activation
Failed, Invalid Key"
2. Removed October Update:
Result: No Improvement
3. Inserted old video card
Result: Immediately works!

So, what causes the new video card to deactivate after a week? and how do I
stop it?
The box will drive me nuts with the old card as HD playback is bad.

I am currently going to reinstall the new card to see if I get another week.

Any ideas how to perform and upgrade?

Thanks

Confirmed that "Hardware Changed" is the problem.

I am guessing my machine will terminate digital cable in 3 days.

I havent posted this info. But the box I have is a Niveus Rainier 500HD with
dual cablecard tuner.

As someone how in the past has worked for two major system manufacturers, I
wouldn't expect support for consumer installed upgrades from the
manufacturer. Niveus support in the past has been good and I may try, but I
do not believe the problem is their issue.

The problem is a windows problem, windows detects a hardware change and
does not allow a means of revalidation of the license for digital cable
playback leaving the only choice as intalling the old hardware.

I have thought about reactivating Vista by calling microsoft as seeing if
the "Hardware Changed" gets cleared. It may not fix the digital cable but it
may be worth a shot.

Comments? and of course thank you for your ideas.

From what you've posted, it isn't that Vista has become deactivated
so I don't see how reactivating the OS would change things.

Are you using the same video driver for the new card as the old one?
I've heard that some of the drivers are causing DRM issues. And the
cabling is unchanged?

I don't know how the components are tied to activation for DCT
rights and activation key that these vendors use.

That being said, I do not get any message like "Digital Cable needs to be
Activated" which is what I would expect. I just retried the key because I
knew of no other reason why Live Content would not play while recorded
content still does.

I am using the same video driver for both cards. 163.75 WHQL
I chose the new card because it was identical to the old card except for the
GPU itself. It is based on the reference board design for a half height
card. The memory chips are even in the same location. As a result it is
hooked up in exactly the same way with the same cabling.

I am currently running the new card again expecting the countdown to expire
i about two more days.

I found a thread on TGB http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/218729.aspx
that seems to indicate that DCT license revokation based on hardware change
has no means for correction but complete reinstall. This seems silly but may
be a reality. I have about 25 hours of shows to watch before I can do that,
soI will likely have to do a video card swap every few days till I catch up.

Confirmed that "Hardware Changed" is the problem.
In the event viewer I get
Security-Licensing-SLC Event 1024 "The hardware has changed"
and
Security-Licensing-SLC Event 1025 "Grace period has been started. Grace
days=3 Grace type=4"
I am guessing my machine will terminate digital cable in 3 days.
How do I revalidate my machine?
Post by Eric Fetzer
Put the new card in again and it works. I am guessing it will only work for
about a week or so when the system will talk to microsoft and invalidate my
Digital Cable key because of the hardware upgrade. There has to be a way to
fix this.
Any thoughts?

Today I tried.
1. Removing tuner, and running in analog then
attempting to reactivate the digital cable with the digital tuner
Result: When Reactivating I get a "Activation
Failed, Invalid Key"
Result: No Improvement
3. Inserted old video card
Result: Immediately works!
So, what causes the new video card to deactivate after a week? and how do I
stop it?
The box will drive me nuts with the old card as HD playback is bad.
I am currently going to reinstall the new card to see if I get another week.
Any ideas how to perform and upgrade?

Eric,

I got similar problem on one of my machines where I occasionally use OCUR.
It's an Alienware laptop.
A week or so ago all over sudden WMC stopped working reporting Restricted
Content - Display Driver.I didn't do much aside from installing a bunch of
updates from Windows Update.

October 2007 cumulative update to Media Center is what's been causing the
grief. As soon as I uninstall it things went back to normal.
Maybe this is due to some features of the graphincs card that the new
updates expects from the driver and the driver doesn't properly implements
those...
The rest of Media Center machines that I have work just fine.

You might want to try to uninstall this update (if you had previously
installed it) and see if that makes a difference.
I reported the problem to MS.
I've also asked some people to help me to diagnose the issue. I will report
back here if anything interesting gets revealed.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Post again at Dell.
I've spoken to Dell representative and they do have a fix. They also asked
to spread the word so everyone with Dell machine who has a problem should
report it there as soon as possible and as loud as possible.

Try again. If you can't get attention, ping me at mpaklin AT hotmail DOT

A week ago I upgraded my 7600gs to an 8500gt video card to improve HD
playback performance on my Cablecard media center. All has behaved
flawlessly for 1 week. Today after a reboot at 7:00pm I am getting a
Restricted Content - Restrictions set by the broadcaster or
originator of
the
content prohibit playback of the program on this computer message on every
channel of live TV.
The system was working flawlessly at 6:00pm.
HDDVDs play fine.
Previously recorded HD content plays fine.
I just can no longer watch any live TV or new recordings
I have tried with no success the following
1. System restore to yesterday and 5 days ago.
2. Reinstalling Video Drivers Nvidia 163.75 WHQL
3. Re-activating digital cable
My original key now fails. (and yes I got the Digital
Cable COA not the Vista one)
Any ideas?
Thanks
Eric

Hey Max,

Hi I understand that you got this to work by removing a update. Do you have
the # of that update. I am having trouble with the same thing and I can not
seem to get it to work for me. Windows Media Center throws a Restricted
Content - Display Driver error. All drivers are current and I did the
updates. I have a LMS550 Lifeware machine.
